(1) OFFICER NOMINATIONS
Next week we’ll have officer elections. The following positions are open for this semester…
President: The president organizes meetings, activities and fundraisers. Khiem Tran is running for this position. Vice-president: The vice-president does what the president doesn’t want to do. This position is vacant. Secretary: The secretary takes and distributes notes from Art Club meetings and activities as well as maintains the contact list. This position is vacant. Exchequer: The treasurer counts the money. Zach Ochoa is running for this position.
(2) FALL PICNICS
The fall picnics are an opportunity for clubs to promote themselves to the wider student body. The college will provide free food this Thursday from 12 – 1:30 in Chester and next Thursday from 12 – 1:30 in Midlothian. Stop by our booth and say hi! Ian Glass and Khiem Tran will be representing the Art Club this Thursday in Chester; Anastasia Kelly and Ilona Strunk will do the same next Thursday in Midlothian.
(3) TRIPS
Washington: No date has been set for the fall day-trip to DC this semester. The college also no longer has the vans that have ferried countless Art Clubers to the nation’s capital, so we’re now investigating new transportation options.
New York: The Art Club New York trip will be April 15 until 17. Mark your calendars!
(4) FULL MOON MADNESS
On Saturday, October 23 from 4 – 9 the college will host Full Moon Madness – a festival/relay to benefit scholarships and emphasize healthy living with a four-mile run, and a one-mile costumed walk – at the Midlothian campus. Face painting or mask making are some ideas for activities Art Club might provide that were brought up at the meeting. Do you have any ideas that would be fun for both children and adults?
(5) PIZZA SALES
Next Tuesday (Sep 14), we have an open slot for the earliest shift, 11:15 – 11:45. Let your friends know about the weekly pizza sale fundraiser! Pizzas are still $2 a slice and sodas are only 50¢ a can every Tuesday. The proceeds are a major source of revenue to pay for Art Club activities including the ever popular expedition to NY.
Volunteering for four Art Club fundraisers is one way to earn active-member status which nets you discounts on Art Club activities including that New York trip.
(6) EXHIBITION OPPORTUNITIES
Focusing on Faces: Winfree Church seeks photographers to submit photography for a photo contest to benefit Haiti. $250 – $500 in prize money. Register online by Sep 30 at ; call 794-5031 for more information.
Petersburg Regional Art Center: The PRAC is looking for “anything handmade” for exhibitions opening on the monthly Friday for the Arts! arts walk in Petersburg. $10 entry fee per piece ($5 for PRAC members) with cash prizes from $100 to $300. Submit ready-to-show artwork on October 2 – 5 for the October 8 show. Contact (804) 733-8200 for more information.
(7) ART CLUB ’ZINE
Are you interested in writing, illustration, publication design, or promoting artwork? The Art Club is investigating whether to start a digital, student-run publication to showcase creativity at John Tyler. Unlike other publications that the college produces, this still unnamed publication would be student run and, being digital, free from the expenses or restrictions of print (color, size, motion and interaction all free and possible online). Since producing a student publication is new territory for the Art Club and hasn’t been seen at JTCC for a while*, your input can have a huge impact. *(I haven’t been able to find any student-run publications since a student newspaper “The Tyleration” or the CCTV program “The Tyler Report” of the ’70s and ’80s.)
Contact Ian Glass or one of the advisors – Mr Ferguson, or Mr Silvent – if this might interest you.
