Alcoa Company Endowed Scholarship

The Alcoa Company established an endowed scholarship to assist a John Tyler Community College student enrolled in any major with the cost of tuition, books and fees.

Eligibility criteria include:

  • Completion of a scholarship application.
  • Must maintain at least a 2.5 grade point average (GPA) while enrolled, or for incoming freshman, must have graduated from high school with at least a 2.5 GPA.
  • May be enrolled as a full-time or part-time student at John Tyler Community College.
  • Must demonstrate some financial need.

ALSTOM Power – “Education is Power” Endowed Scholarship

The ALSTOM Power – “Education is Power” Endowed Scholarship is dedicated to assist the children of current manufacturing associates who are interested in pursuing an education at John Tyler Community College. The ALSTOM commitment to its associates and the customers the company serves can best be demonstrated by the company’s statement about their mission: “World class people plus creative solutions, plus innovated technology, multiplied by a through and rapid response will ensure maximum customer service with the result leading to market leadership. The mission extends to the community with which we share gratefully with John Tyler Community College. We wish to invest our resource with our associates and their families to help ensure a viable and vibrant future for our power generation business.”

The scholarship is designed to assist dependents of Richmond manufacturing division associates, who attend John Tyler Community College, with tuition, books and fees.

The following criteria must be met:

  • Complete a scholarship application.
  • Must maintain at least a 3.0 grade point average (GPA) while enrolled, or for incoming freshman, have graduated from high school with at least a 3.0 GPA.
  • Must be enrolled as a full-time student at John Tyler Community College.
  • Must be involved in community activities and/or other extracurricular activities.
  • Preference will be given to dependents of a Richmond manufacturing-division associate.

Blair E. Underwood Endowed Scholarship

The Blair E. Underwood Scholarship was developed by the Underwood family to assist a Petersburg High School graduate attending John Tyler Community College with the cost of tuition, books and fees.  Blair E. Underwood graduated from Petersburg High School in 1981.

Eligibility criteria include:

  • Completion of a scholarship application.
  • Must maintain at least a 2.5 grade point average (GPA) while enrolled, or for incoming freshman, must have graduated from high school with at least a 2.5 GPA.
  • May be enrolled as either a full-time or part-time student at John Tyler Community College.
  • Must demonstrate some financial need.
  • Must be a graduate of Petersburg High School.

Brenco Incorporated Endowed Scholarship

The Brenco Incorporated Endowed Scholarship is developed by Brenco to assist its employees or their dependents in pursuing an education at John Tyler Community College. The scholarship is designed to assist students, enrolled in any major, with tuition, books and fees.

Eligibility criteria include:

  • Completion of a scholarship application.
  • Must maintain at least a 2.5 grade point average (GPA) while enrolled, or for incoming freshman, must have graduated from high school with at least a 2.5 GPA.
  • May be enrolled as either a full-time or part-time student at John Tyler Community College.
  • Preference will be given to dependents of Brenco employees.

Capital One Scholarship

The Capital One Endowed Scholarship is designed to assist John Tyler Community College students, who participated in the dual enrollment program, with tuition, books and fees.

The following criteria must be met:

  • Complete a scholarship application.
  • Must maintain at least a 2.5 grade point average (GPA) while enrolled, or for incoming freshman, have graduated from high school with at least a 2.5 GPA.
  • May be enrolled either as a full or part-time student at John Tyler Community College.
  • Must demonstrate some financial need.
  • Preference will be given to students who participated in the dual enrollment program.

Catherine Naomi Hinson Wyatt Memorial Endowed Scholarship

The Catherine Naomi Hinson Wyatt Memorial Endowed Scholarship is designed to assist students who graduated from Petersburg High School and are enrolled in a technical studies program at John Tyler Community College with tuition, books and fees.

Eligibility criteria include:

  • Completion of a scholarship application.
  • Must maintain at least a 2.5 GPA while enrolled, or for incoming freshmen, must have graduated from high school with at least a 2.5 GPA.
  • Must be enrolled in one of the following programs of study at John Tyler: Associate of Applied Science degree in Technical Studies (heating, ventilation and air conditioning track; industrial electricity track; mechanical maintenance track; precision machining computer numerical control (CNC) track; precision machining track; residential electricity track; or welding track); Certificate in building construction, precision machining technology, or welding; or Career Studies Certificate in applied technology, basic precision machining technology, computer numerical control, electricity, heating and air conditioning, industrial electricity, mechanical maintenance, residential electricity, or welding.
  • May be enrolled as either a full-time or part-time student at John Tyler Community College.
  • Must demonstrate financial need.
  • Must be a graduate of Petersburg High School.

Charles City Ruritan Club Scholarship

The Charles City Ruritan Club Scholarship is designed to assist a student who is a resident of Charles City County and enrolled at John Tyler Commuinity College in any major with the cost of tuition, books and fees.

Eligibility criteria include:

  • Completion of a scholarship application.
  • Must maintain at least a 2.5 grade point average (GPA) while enrolled, or for incoming freshman, must have graduated from high school with at least a 2.5 GPA.
  • May be enrolled as either a full-time or part-time student at John Tyler Community College.
  • Must be a resident of Charles City County.

Commander Family Scholarship

The Commander Family Scholarship, developed by Dick and Jeannie Commander, is designed to assist Thomas Dale High School graduates enrolled at John Tyler Community College with the cost of tuition, books and fees.

Eligibility criteria include:

  • Completion of a scholarship application.
  • Must maintain at least a 2.75 grade point average (GPA) while enrolled.
  • May be enrolled as either a full-time or part-time student at John Tyler Community College.
  • Must demonstrate some financial need.
  • Must carry a minimum course load of nine hours a semester.
  • Preference will be given to graduates from Thomas Dale High School.

Dare to Dream Scholarship

The Dare to Dream Scholarship was established in January 2011 by Chris and Mara Hilliar. The Hilliars value education and understand that it is never too early or too late to get an education. The Hilliars and some of their children have taken the opportunity to attend community college and have benefited from their time there. The scholarship is created to assist a full time, John Tyler Community College student, planning to transfer to a 4-year institution to earn a bachelor’s degree, with the cost of tuition, books and fees.

The following criteria must be met:

  • Complete a scholarship application.
  • Must maintain at least a 3.0 grade point average (GPA) while enrolled, or for incoming freshman, have graduated from high school with at least a 3.0 GPA.
  • Must be enrolled as a full-time student at John Tyler Community College.
  • Must demonstrate some financial need.
  • Must be planning to transfer to a 4-year institution.

Dennis and Hanh Hellenguard Memorial Endowed Scholarship

The Dennis and Hanh Hellenguard Scholarship is established to assist students, enrolled in any certificate or degree program at John Tyler Community College, with the cost of tuition, books and fees. The purpose of the scholarship is to assist students to learn a marketable skill.

The following criteria must be met:

  • Must complete a scholarship application.
  • Must maintain at least a 2.8 grade point average (GPA) while enrolled, or for incoming freshman, have graduated from high school with at least a 2.8 GPA.
  • May be enrolled as a full or part-time student at John Tyler Community College.
  • Must demonstrate some financial need.

Dominion Resources Scholarship

Dominion Resources Services created a scholarship at John Tyler Community College in an effort to expand access to students in Petersburg and the surrounding localities that comprise the Gateway region.  The scholarship will be awarded annually to students who live in Petersburg or in one of the other Gateway Region localities and will assist a John Tyler Community College student with tuition, books and fees.

The following criteria must be met:

  • Complete a scholarship application.
  • Must maintain at least a 2.5 grade point average (GPA) while enrolled, or for incoming freshman, have graduated from high school with at least a 2.5 GPA.
  • May be enrolled either as a full or part-time student at John Tyler Community College.
  • Preference will be given to students who reside in Petersburg and then to students who reside in the surrounding localities that comprise the Gateway region.

Excellence in Biology Scholarship

The Excellence in Biology Scholarship was established by John D. Sharp, Sr., a retired JTCC faculty member, in honor of his wife, Karol Sharp.  The scholarship is designed to assist a John Tyler Community College student who excels in biology with the cost of tuition, books and fees.

Eligibility criteria include:

  • Completion of a scholarship application.
  • Must maintain at least a 3.5 grade point average (GPA) while enrolled, or for incoming freshman, must have graduated from high school with at least a 3.5 GPA.
  • May be enrolled as either a full-time or part-time student at John Tyler Community College.
  • Must demonstrate some financial need.
  • Must have completed BIO 101.
  • Must be involved in community activities and/or other extracurricular activities, i.e., Biology Club.
  • One of the required recommendation forms included in the scholarship application package must be completed by a John Tyler Community College biology faculty member.

General Scholarship

The Foundation General Scholarship is established to assist a student enrolled in any certificate program at John Tyler Community College with the cost of tuition, books and fees.

Eligibility criteria include:

  • Completion of a scholarship application.
  • Must maintain a 2.5 grade point average (GPA) while enrolled, or for incoming freshman, must have graduated from high school with at least a 2.5 GPA.
  • May be enrolled as either a full-time or part-time student at John Tyler Community College.
  • Must be enrolled in a certificate program (C, CSC).
  • Must demonstrate some financial need.

George H. Eliades Memorial Scholarship

The George H. Eliades Memorial Scholarship was established in memory of George H. Eliades by his son, Homer C. Eliades. The scholarship is available to students enrolled in any major at John Tyler Community College to assist with the cost of tuition, books and fees.

Eligibility criteria include:

  • Completion of a scholarship application.
  • Must maintain at least a 2.7 grade point average (GPA) while enrolled, or for incoming freshman, must have graduated from high school with at least a 2.7 GPA.
  • May be enrolled as either a full-time or part-time student at John Tyler Community College.
  • Must demonstrate some financial need.
  • Must be a resident of the City of Hopewell.

JTCC Faculty Memorial Scholarship

The JTCC Memorial Scholarship fund was created by the JTCC Faculty Association in remembrance of former JTCC employees and is designed to assist a student enrolled at John Tyler Community College with the cost of tuition, books and fees.

Eligibility criteria include:

  • Completion of a scholarship application.
  • Must maintain at least a 2.7 grade point average (GPA) while enrolled, or for incoming freshman, must have graduated from high school with at least a 2.7 GPA.
  • May be enrolled as either a full-time or part-time student at John Tyler Community College.

Kiwanis Club of Chester Scholarship

The Kiwanis Club of Chester Scholarship is developed by the Kiwanis Club of Chester to assist a student enrolled in any major at John Tyler Community College with the cost of tuition, books and fees.

Eligibility criteria include:

  • Completion of a scholarship application.
  • Must maintain at least a 2.7 grade point average (GPA) while enrolled, or for incoming freshman, must have graduated from high school with at least a 2.7 GPA.
  • May be enrolled as either a full-time or part-time student at John Tyler Community College.
  • Must demonstrate some financial need.
  • Preference will be given to students who are residents of southern Chesterfield County and who are involved in community or church activities.

MARKI Scholarship

The MARKI Scholarship is established in memory of Kenneth L. McCray by his wife Myriam McCray and daughter Mara Hilliar. Mr. McCray served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict, was a graphic artist and print production manager by trade and will be remembered for his work with the “VA is for Lovers” campaign. He loved to sail in his free time on a 32-foot Benetau named after his daughters, Mara and Kim. It is the wish of the family to honor his patriotism and kindness by creating the MARKI Scholarship to assist John Tyler Community College student veterans with the cost of tuition, books and fees.

The following criteria must be met:

  • Complete a scholarship application.
  • Must maintain at least a 2.5 grade point average (GPA) while enrolled, or for incoming freshman, have graduated from high school with at least a 2.5 GPA.
  • May be enrolled either as a full or part-time student at John Tyler Community College.
  • Must demonstrate some financial need.
  • Must be a veteran.

New Beginnings Scholarship

The New Beginnings Scholarship was established in 2007 by the student club, New Beginnings, in order to assist an older or returning student enrolled at John Tyler Community College with the cost of tuition, books and fees.

The following criteria must be met:

  • Completion of a scholarship application.
  • Must maintain at least a 3.0 grade point average (GPA) while enrolled, or for incoming freshman, must have graduated from high school with at least a 3.0 GPA.
  • May be enrolled as either a full-time or part-time student at John Tyler Community College.
  • Must demonstrate some financial need.
  • Must have completed one semester (of at least six credits) at JTCC.

Nova Nell Huckaby Endowed Scholarship

David and Judith Ledbetter discovered a way to help their community and celebrate the accomplishment of Mr. Ledbetter’s mother when they established an endowed scholarship in honor of his mother. Mr. Ledbetter’s interest in community college and education was influenced by his mother, Nova Nell Huckaby, who as a single mother of two, began taking classes at a community college in an effort to advance her career and take care of her family. Mr. and Mrs. Ledbetter’s gift will honor Ms. Huckaby for her determination to better herself through education. Their gift will help make it possible for other single parents to pursue an education and obtain a degree. In December 2002, the Nova Huckaby Endowed Scholarship was established to assist a John Tyler Community College student, enrolled in any program, with tuition, books and fees.

Eligibility criteria include:

  • Completion of a scholarship application.
  • Must maintain at least a 2.5 grade point average (GPA) while enrolled, or for incoming freshman, must have graduated from high school with at least a 2.5 GPA.
  • May be enrolled as a full-time or part-time student at John Tyler Community College.
  • Must demonstrate some financial need.
  • Preference will be given to a single parent residing with one or more of his or her minor children.

Student Services Scholarship

The Student Services Scholarship is designed to assist a student enrolled in any associate degree program at John Tyler Community College with the cost of tuition, books and fees.

Eligibility criteria include:

  • Completion of a scholarship application.
  • Must maintain at least a 3.0 cumulative grade point average (GPA) while enrolled, or for incoming freshman, must have graduated from high school with at least a 3.0 GPA.
  • May be enrolled as a full-time or part-time student at John Tyler Community College.
  • Must be enrolled in associate degree program (AS, AA, AAA, or AAS).
  • Must demonstrate some financial need.
  • Must have demonstrated significant contributions to student development services and the extracurricular life of the College.

Theresa Hands Windham Memorial Endowed Scholarship

The Theresa Hands Windham Memorial Endowed Scholarship was developed by the family, friends, and colleagues of Mrs. Theresa Hands Windham.  Mrs. Windham was a dedicated employee of John Tyler Community College for six years before her death in 1993. One of Mrs. Windham's primary goals during her years at John Tyler was the development of student scholarships. Her family, therefore, felt that establishing this scholarship in her name was a most fitting way to honor her. This scholarship is designed to assist a John Tyler Community College student with the cost of tuition, books and fees.

The following criteria must be met:

  • Completion of a scholarship application.
  • Must maintain at least a 2.7 grade point average (GPA) while enrolled, or for incoming freshman, must have graduated from high school with at least a 2.7 GPA.
  • May be enrolled as either a full or part-time student at John Tyler Community College.
  • Must demonstrate some financial need.

Verizon Endowed Scholarship

The Verizon Endowed Scholarship is designed to assist John Tyler Community College students, enrolled in any major, with tuition, books and fees.

Eligibility criteria include:

  • Completion of a scholarship application
  • Must maintain at least a 3.0 grade point average (GPA) while enrolled, or for incoming freshman, must have graduated from high school with at least a 3.0 GPA.
  • May be enrolled as a full-time or part-time student at John Tyler Community College.
  • Preference will be given to Verizon employees or their dependents.

Verizon Foundation Endowed Scholarship

In March 2004, the Verizon Foundation contributed funds to the John Tyler Community College Foundation in support of scholarships for the Hispanic project at JTCC. The scholarship is designed to assist a student enrolled at John Tyler Community College with the cost of tuition, books and fees.

Eligibility criteria include:

  • Completion of a scholarship application.
  • Must maintain at least a 2.5 grade point average (GPA) while enrolled, or for incoming freshman, must have graduated from high school with at least a 2.5 GPA.
  • May be enrolled as either a full-time or part-time student at John Tyler Community College.
  • Must demonstrate some financial need.
  • Preference will be given to applicants of Hispanic descent.

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2239 Scholarship

The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2239 Scholarship is developed by the Robert E. Lee Post, Colonial Heights, Virginia, to assist a student enrolled at John Tyler Community College with the cost of tuition, books and fees.

Eligibility criteria include:

  • Completion of a scholarship application.
  • Must maintain at least a 3.0 grade point average (GPA) while enrolled.
  • May be enrolled as either a full-time or part-time student at John Tyler Community College.
  • Must have completed at least 30 credits.
  • Preference will be given to graduates from Matoaca, Lloyd C. Bird, Thomas Dale, or Colonial Heights High School.

Waste Management Endowed Scholarship

Waste Management, Inc., developed an endowed scholarship to assist graduates of either Amelia County High School or Charles City County High School. The scholarship will be given to each high school in alternate years. The scholarship will assist a student enrolled at John Tyler Community College with the cost of tuition, books and fees.

Eligibility criteria include:

  • Completion of a scholarship application.
  • Must maintain at least a 2.5 grade point average (GPA) while enrolled, or for incoming freshman, must have graduated from high school with at least a 2.5 GPA.
  • May be enrolled as either a full-time or part-time student at John Tyler Community College.
  • Must demonstrate some financial need.
  • Must be a recent graduate of Amelia County High School or Charles City County High School.
  • Preference will be given to a well-rounded individual who is active in the community.

Wishes Are Unstoppable Scholarship

The Wishes Are Unstoppable Scholarship is designed to assist a single parent enrolled at John Tyler Community College with the cost of tuition, books and fees.

Eligibility criteria include:

  • Completion of a scholarship application.
  • Must maintain at least a 2.5 grade point average (GPA) while enrolled, or for incoming freshman, must have graduated from high school with at least a 2.5 GPA.
  • May be enrolled as either a full-time or part-time student at John Tyler Community College.
