Senior Citizens

If you are a citizen age 60 or older, you are encouraged to take advantage of free tuition provided by the Senior Citizens Higher Education Act of 1974.  The Act provides two kinds of tuition assistance:

Virginia residents who are 60 and above can take credit classes and some non-credit classes at the College free of charge. To be eligible for free tuition and fees for credit classes, part-time or full-time, you must meet the following criteria:

  1. Be 60 years of age or older
  2. Be a legal resident of Virginia
  3. Had a taxable income not exceeding $15,000 for state income tax purposes for the year preceding the year in which enrollment is sought.
  4. Be admitted to the college as an instate student.

Virginia residents who are 60 and above may audit credit classes and take some non-credit classes free of charge. To be eligible for free tuition for audit of credit classes or for taking some non-credit classes you must meet the following criteria and present documentation of each criteria for verification:

  1. Be 60 years of age or older
  2. Be a legal resident of Virginia
  3. Be admitted to the college as an instate student(to audit), non-credit students would have to complete a non-credit application.

Registration for senior citizens begins at 9:00 a.m. on the first day of classes and senior citizens are required to have an application on file with the college.  All senior citizens must complete paperwork required in the Admissions & Records Office at either campus and must enroll in person to receive free tuition. All classes must achieve a minimum enrollment of tuition-paying students in order for senior citizens to enroll in the class.
