Establishing Scholarships

John Tyler Community College and the John Tyler Community College Foundation, Inc. are dedicated to providing scholarships to students with financial needs to ensure they can receive an education despite a lack of money. Thousands of scholarships have been presented to students at the College through the generosity of local business, industry, organizations and individuals. Many of these scholarship students would never be able to attend college without this support. The cooperative effort of our community allows us to continue to serve a diverse and large population in Virginia.

The Need

The John Tyler goal is to provide opportunities to adults who have been offered few prospects. Our student body is not traditional. Four out of every five students are part time, and one-half are enrolled in classes at night. About 80 percent of all students work in a full-or part-time job. Furthermore, the majority of students at John Tyler Community College are females. Many are single parents or displaced homemakers who need training or retraining, while some students are welfare recipients. The College’s scholarship program was created to help reduce the financial burden on these students, who are trying desperately to better themselves and gain better employment. Many of the students are returning to school after several years of absence, are likely to be first-generation students and in need of financial aid.

Endowed Scholarships

The gift of an endowed scholarship will guarantee that a scholarship will be awarded to a deserving student or several students each and every year, in perpetuity. The cost of endowing a scholarship is $25,000. A scholarship can be made in the form of a pledge from one to five years in length. The endowed scholarship will create approximately $1,000 per year ($500 per semester) to cover the fee, tuition and book expenses for a full-time student or a part-time student. The scholarship will not be awarded until it is fully endowed.

Annual Scholarships

Scholarships donated to the Foundation on an annual basis also may be created. The minimum donation to create a scholarship is $500 per year, or $250 per semester.

If you would like to establish a scholarship, please contact the Foundation.
