Below you find more information on the Library’s circulation policies:
Library Cards
A library card will be issued to those who complete an application form and present a photo ID. Cardholders are responsible for all materials charged out to their card. A $1.00 fee is charged for the first replacement card, and a $5.00 fee for subsequent replacement cards. Lost or stolen cards must be reported to the Library.
Loan Policies
Library cards must be presented when checking out materials. The loan period for most items is four weeks, with one renewal. All items should be returned directly to the Library, or they may be returned to the outdoor book drop available on both campuses. Videos should not be placed in the outdoor book drops. Books checked out at one campus Library may be returned to the other campus Library.
Renewals
Students may use the "My Account " component of the library catalog to renew items. Renewals may also be made by calling the library at 804-706-5195 or 804-594-1519, or at the service desk within the library. Renewals can also be made via e-mail to library@jtcc.edu. If e-mailing, please give your name, library card number, and the JTCC barcode numbers of the items you wish to renew. Items cannot be renewed if the item is on hold for another person or if it is part of a non-renewable collection such as Popular Reading or Child Care.
Holds
Students may use the "My Account "component of the library catalog to place a hold request on library materials. Holds may also be placed by calling 804-706-5195 or 804-594-1519, placing a request in person, or via e-mail to library@jtcc.edu. If e-mailing, please give your name, library card number, the title of the item, and its barcode number. [The barcode number may be seen by clicking the All Items link on the full record in the catalog.] When an item is available for pickup, you will be contacted through the student e-mail system. If you are a community borrower, you will be contacted via e-mail, USPS, or phone. You will have one week to pick up the material after notification has been sent.
Fines and Fees
Fines of $0.25 per day are assessed for each overdue item in the Popular Reading Collection and in the Child Care Collection. The Child Care Collection has a grace period of five days during which a fine is not collected. If an item is returned after the five-day grace period, the full fine will be charged for those five days and any additional days the item is overdue.
Important - Fines of $0.25 per day per item are imposed on overdue reserve materials that by faculty instruction circulate outside the Library for one-day, three-day, or one week periods.
Every day an item is overdue is counted. The maximum fine is $5.00 per item. The charge for a lost or damaged item is $50 per book or the replacement cost of the book, whichever is greater, $10 per cassette or CD, and $75 per video (VHS tape, DVD) or the replacement cost, whichever is greater, in addition to any accrued fines.
Patrons will be issued a refund for items that they have paid for and are subsequently able to return if:
- the returned material is undamaged,
- the return occurs within 6 months of the original due date of the material, and
- the item has not already been replaced
It will be at the discretion of the Library Coordinator to accept the return of materials over 6 months overdue, or to charge the replacement fee.
The replacement fee for lost or damaged Interlibrary Loan material will be determined by the respective lending library.
Unpaid library obligations will prevent students from registering and obtaining grade transcripts. The Commonwealth of Virginia may also recover such costs from an individual's state income tax refund.
