Blackboard’s “Assignment” tool allows students to submit a file and for instructors to add it to the gradebook. The image below shows an example of the “Assignment” tool.
- After reading the instructions for the assignment, click the “View/Complete Assignment” link.

- The “Upload Assignment” page will be displayed. The instructor might have uploaded a file for you to view and/or use for the assignment. If you see a link across from “Assignment Files,” make sure to view the file. If it is a document to which you are to add content, make sure to save the file to your computer and open it with the appropriate program before you edit it. If you edit the webpage version of the file, it might not save correctly.
To save the file:
Click the link for the file and choose to save it instead of opening it. Save the file to your computer in a location where you can relocate it. Once the file has been saved, minimize your Internet browser window to return to your computer’s desktop and then locate the file.
- Once you have completed the assignment and are ready to submit your file to your instructor, return to the “Upload Assignment” page.
- You will have to enter something in the “Comments” textbox, even if it is just something like, “My assignment is attached.”
- Click the “Browse” button across from “File to Attach.”
- The “Choose File” dialog box will open. Locate the file you wish to submit to your instructor, and then click the “Open” button.
- If needed, click the “Add Another File” button to upload another document.
- When you are ready to send your assignment to your instructor, click the “Submit” button in the bottom right corner of the page. Do not click the “Save” button. If you click “Save,” the assignment will be saved but not sent. You will still be able to access the assignment, but your instructor will not be able to view it.
Note: Once you submit your assignment, you will not be able to edit it. So, make sure that you submit the correct document.
- Click the “OK” button on the resulting page.
You can view your submitted assignment by accessing the online gradebook.
- Click “Tools” (or “Student Tools”) from the menu on the left.
- Click “My Grades.”
- If your instructor has not yet graded your assignment, you will see a red exclamation mark on the “Grade” line. You can click the exclamation mark to view your submitted file.
If your instructor has graded your assignment, your grade will appear in the “Grades” column. Click the grade to view more information from your instructor, such as general comments and a marked copy of your assignment.

- The “Review Assignments” page is broken into three sections. The first section, “Assignment Information,” lists the original assignment. The second section, “Assignment Material,” contains the comments and the document that you sent to your instructor. The third section, “Feedback From Instructor,” shows your grade, comments from your instructor, and, possibly, your graded document. If the instructor sent you a graded copy of your assignment, click the link across from “Files From Instructor” to view the document.
