Student Clubs

The College's student clubs offer faculty, staff and students an opportunity to interact outside of the classroom and connect over common interests on a regular basis. Below is a list of current student groups at the College, along with contact information for more information. Be sure to also check out the student activities page and the College’s general events page for information on upcoming events at the College.

Student Council Cabinet (SCC)

The purpose of the SCC is to further the best interests of the students of the College by providing the Office of Student Activities with recommendations concerning the development and promotion of student activities and by offering suggestions to the Dean of Student Services addressing the betterment of student life at the institution. Art Club
The Art Club’s mission is to provide visual art students, as well as all John Tyler students, faculty, staff and the greater community, exposure to the arts in all forms. The club helps visual arts students pursue their academic, professional and personal goals through exhibition and portfolio opportunities. Each April, the club organizes a low-cost bus trip to New York City, and throughout the year, club members look for opportunities to see art in the greater Richmond community.

Biology Club
The Biology Club seeks to promote interest in and raise awareness of health and nutrition issues among the John Tyler community, as well as the local community.

Chemistry Club
The Chemistry Club at John Tyler is a chapter of the student affiliates of the American Chemical Society. As such, the club was created to promote chemistry and related scientific fields through community service projects, lectures, field trips and participation in campus activities. This active club focuses on creating fun, hands-on demonstrations for all ages to promote Earth Day, environmentalism, scientific discovery and more.

The Elements of Life Club
The Elements of Life Club was created to foster an understanding and love of chemistry and biology among students at John Tyler. The club participates in several outreach activities throughout the year, including going to local elementary schools. At each event, members show participants that science is fun and exciting.

Funeral Services Club
The Funeral Services Club’s goals include: encouraging interaction among the funeral service students, providing volunteer opportunities to help our community and college, and helping students prepare for the National Board Exam for Funeral Service Licensure.

History Club
The History Club at John Tyler was created to provide intellectual and social opportunities for students and faculty interested in history. The club organizes trips to places like Washington, D.C. and Norfolk, as well as organizes on-campus events with authors and speakers focusing on history.

Human Services Club
The Human Services Club at John Tyler was created to expand upon opportunities for students in the College’s human services classes. The club focuses on professional development. Club members and faculty have even organized day-long conferences with nationally known speakers.

Nursing Students’ Association
The Nursing Students’ Association provides programs and educational sessions representative of the fundamental interests and concerns of nursing students at the College.

Theatre Club
The Theatre Club works to foster educational seminars and events that promote the theatrical arts at John Tyler Community College. The club provides financial and promotional support to productions given by the theatre classes, as well as club events. The group holds a number of events, including attending local theatre, a fright night at the College, cabaret and talent shows.

Phi Theta Kappa
Phi Theta Kappa is an international honor society for two-year colleges. Phi Theta Kappa not only recognizes academic excellence, but also encourages members to serve others at their College and in the community at large. John Tyler Community College proudly operates two chapters of Phi Theta Kappa. The Beta Omicron Omicron chapter is based at the Midlothian Campus, and the Tau Rho chapter is for students at the Chester Campus.

Future Teachers Club
The Future Teachers Club at John Tyler is open to all students interested in the teaching profession. The club provides opportunities for members to network and share information on careers, certification and transfer; learn from guest speakers; volunteer for education-related community service projects; and obtain advising information about EDU 200 and Praxis I.

The Martial Arts Club teaches members about different styles of the martial arts.

The Disciples of Christ Club seeks to “teach people who they are in Christ and how to use what the Lord has given us through His Word.”

The Chess Club meets regularly throughout the year to play chess. All levels are welcome!

Declare Yourself
Declare Yourself was formed at John Tyler for students who wish to remain politically active. The group is non-partisan and will meet to discuss current events and citizen strategies for reaching out to government. The group also brings in guest speakers or plans trips to learn more about the political process. The group also works to promote voter registration and voter education.

Student Veterans Organization
The Student Veterans Organization was created to assist veterans with the transition from being a service member to being a student. The club supports all U.S. military personnel attending John Tyler, as well as promotes patriotism at the College.

Virginia21
Virginia21 is an action-tank involving young people across the Commonwealth in the political process by providing information, directing advocacy and coordinating political action on a non-partisan issue agenda.
