Community Activities and Outreach

John Tyler Community College has always been an active and valuable part of the greater Richmond community, and throughout the year, students and employees participate in outreach activities that enhance the College’s educational mission and commitment to the community. Below are just a few of the ways the team at John Tyler Community College is at work in the community:

Angel Tree – In 2005, John Tyler began sponsoring the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree program in Richmond and Petersburg, helping to make holiday wishes come true for children. As a part of the sponsorship, the College community adopts 100 angels each November. Faculty, staff and students also spend several Saturdays in December volunteering at local distribution centers.

Habitat for Humanity – On October 19 and 20, 2007, John Tyler Community College took on the challenge of participating in a local Habitat for Humanity build. All College faculty, staff and students were encouraged to participate as a way of celebrating the College’s 40th anniversary and our ongoing commitment to community service.

Heart Walk – Each year, a team of faculty, staff and students from John Tyler participate in the American Heart Association’s Heart Walk, raising awareness and money for heart disease, stroke and other cardiovascular diseases.

Legislative Advocacy – John Tyler Community College is a member of the Virginia Community College System, and as such, the College participates in a number of legislative advocacy activities during Virginia’s General Assembly Session. During the 2008 session, two groups of students from John Tyler Community College will visit with lawmakers to discuss how John Tyler Community College has improved their lives.
