Frequently-Used Databases

General

EBSCOhost provides databases indexing magazines and journals in all fields of study. Many of the articles cited in these databases will be available to you in full text. The most important of these EBSCO company products are Academic Search Complete and MasterFile Premier. Academic Search Complete will index and give you the full text of more scholarly articles. MasterFile Premier will index and give you the full text of articles of a more general, easier to understand, nature. You may find it useful to use both of these indexes when searching for periodical (magazine and journal) articles on your research topic. A full list and description of all the EBSCOhost databases available to you is here.

Factiva is a Dow Jones-Reuters database maintaining the two companies' strong business and news focus. Factiva indexes and gives the full text for over 8,000 magazines, journals, newspapers and other sources. Among the publications indexed are many general interest periodicals and scholarly publications; the database will serve the user whose needs go beyond business and the news.

Facts on File presents precise summaries of news events from 1940 to the present. The news database includes maps, documents, and brief biographies. Other Facts on File databases are Issues and Controversies, Today's Science, the World Almanac Reference Database, and the World Almanac Encyclopedia.

Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center is a database from the Thompson-Gale Company bringing together millions of articles discussing the pros and cons of contemporary issues.

FirstSearch features 22 indexes and databases, allowing for specialized periodical article searches in fields such as geography, art, and economics. The premier database within the group is WorldCat, which is the catalog of items held by thousands of libraries worldwide. There are no full text articles in any of the FirstSearch databases.

CINAHL (the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature) is the standard periodical index for nursing students. It, however, offers only a limited number of articles in full text. Ovid Nursing eBook Collection is a database giving the student the electronic text of 21 nursing guides, handbooks, and manuals in important fields of nursing practice.

Salem Health is the online text of the five-volume medical encyclopedia Magill’s Medical Guide 2008. To access this resource from a campus computer, at the Salem Press Web site, click on “remote access login” tab at the top of the page, and enter the password: health2008. To use the database off- campus, you will need to register on the Salem Press Web site. To do so, click on the “remote access” link at the bottom of the page and follow the instructions. JSTOR (journal storage) is an archive of academic journals. JTCC subscribes to four of JSTOR’s collections, giving access to the back issues of approximately 550 journals. The collections are particularly strong in history, language, literature, economics, sociology, political science, art, art history, and philosophy. JSTOR journals are subject to what is called a “moving wall,” a time lag of (usually) 3 to 5 years from the most current issue of a publication and the full text available in JSTOR.

NetLibrary This is an addition of 1000 titles to our collection of electronic books. All NetLibrary books are listed in their appropriate places in our standard online catalog by author, title, or subject/keyword, and you may "open them" with a click on the proper links in the catalog record. Typing the word NetLibrary as keyword in the online catalog will bring up the full list of all the titles. The books may also be searched and accessed from the NetLibrary site. IMPORTANT: Off-campus access to NetLibrary requires you to establish a free account for yourself from an on-campus computer.

You can also access information and tips on working with databases from off-campus computers.
