General Information
The safety of students, faculty and staff is of the utmost importance to John Tyler Community College. When an event occurs within the service area or at one or more of the campuses, the College will make every effort to report closing information in a timely and accurate manner. The challenge faced by the College is that such events are generally unpredictable, and conditions often change as the event progresses. The College will make every effort to notify students, faculty and staff of closing information using the criteria indicated within this policy.
John Tyler Community College Service Area
The College’s service area consists of the cities of Colonial Heights, Hopewell and Petersburg, as well as the counties of Amelia, Charles City, Chesterfield, Dinwiddie, Prince George, Surry and Sussex.
Closing and Delays Definitions
Cancelling or delaying the opening of classes is dependent on the time, location, and severity of an event. Classes may be cancelled college wide by day or evening status. They may also be cancelled by class meeting time or location (campus or building) of the class. If it is decided that the College must open late, every effort will be made to make the announcement before the beginning of classes.

College Closed
When the College announces that it is closed, all day and evening classes are cancelled and administrative offices are closed at the Chester and Midlothian campuses, the JTCC Nursing Education Center at CJW Medical Center, and the Community College Workforce Alliance (CCWA) at the Featherstone Professional Center. When possible, this decision is made between 5:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. Notifications will be sent out, and local television and radio stations will be contacted. When needed, the decision may be made the night before or at any point during the day when an event is in progress. This applies to weekday and weekend classes. |

Inclement Weather
Driving conditions within the College’s service area may vary depending on where an event has occurred. Students should exercise their own judgment when determining if it is prudent to attend classes. Students must always notify their instructors when they cannot attend class due to an event for which the College may or may not experience a closing or delayed opening. Faculty and staff must consult their supervisors for leave approval if they cannot come into the college during an event for which the College may or may not experience a closing or delayed opening.
