Preparing for College and Career Opportunities
Friday, April 4, 2014 at John Tyler Community College, Chester Campus
Dr. Ted Raspiller, new president at John Tyler, kicked off the PEER Consortium’s annual conference with a welcome to over 200 attendees representing education, business/industry and government in the region and thanked the event Sponsors, VCU, Dominion and Coesia North America & Mexico – G.D USA.
Tammie Collins (Dinwiddie County Government) and Renee Chapline (Virginia’s Gateway Region) spoke about the critical interplay between external support for school programs, quality education and economic development to ensure community vitality and global competitiveness.
Breakout sessions followed in buildings and labs across campus, with topics about specific career pathways, workplace readiness skills, classroom strategies and unique community college benefits and opportunities. Please refer to the Agenda, Presentations and Handouts below for details.
Numerous exhibitors from various government agencies, universities and industry sectors networked with participants in the College’s Nicholas Center. New exhibitors this year included Evonik Corporation, Exploring (Boy Scouts), Virginia FIRST Robotics and the MathScience Innovation Center. State-of-the-art advanced manufacturing was the focus in Godwin Hall, where presentations and a coffee break were hosted by the College’s Industrial Technology Department with Rolls-Royce, CCAM, InSource, Hale’s Electrical Services and Coesia North America & Mexico – G.D USA.
The PEER Consortium will facilitate follow-up activities that were requested by the ten school divisions.
