CLEP Testing

What is a CLEP test?
The College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) gives you the opportunity to receive college credit for what you already know, by earning qualifying scores on any one or more of the 35 CLEP examinations. A total of 2,900 colleges and universities in the United States, including John Tyler Community College, will recognize your comprehensive subject knowledge acquired through independent or prior study, on-the-job training, professional development, cultural pursuits, or internships. Please note, however, that CLEP examinations with an optional essay are not given at John Tyler.

Who can take a CLEP test at John Tyler?
Any student currently enrolled at John Tyler community College or another Virginia community college may take a CLEP test at the College.

How much does a CLEP test cost?
Each CLEP test taken at JTCC costs $80.00. This fee must be paid at the time the CLEP is taken using a valid credit card. Anyone presenting a credit card in the name of another person must present written authorization from the card owner to use the card to the test proctor.

Where are CLEP tests offered at John Tyler?
CLEP tests are only administered at the Chester Campus Testing Center (Room 135A in Moyar Hall) during pre-arranged times. A photo id must be presented at the time of the test.

How do I sign up for a CLEP test at John Tyler Community College?
Complete the CLEP Testing Application and e-mail it to testing@jtcc.edu. You can also mail or bring your form to the Testing Center in Room M-135A at the Chester Campus.

Submit this completed form when you are ready to take a CLEP test and no later than one week prior to the date you would like to take your CLEP test.

Once your application is received, the Chester Campus Testing Center will contact you about setting up a testing time.  If you plan to transfer, check with your college to make sure they will accept CLEP credits, not all colleges do.

How can I prepare for a CLEP test?
The CLEP Official Study Guide is the only CLEP study guide with sample questions for all CLEP exams. It contains descriptions of the exams, sample questions and answers for each exam, test-taking tips, and more. You can order the guide at the College Board’s web site. If you are taking a CLEP test which is the equivalent of a class taught at John Tyler, you can obtain a copy of the textbook used for that course from the bookstore and use that as basis for reviewing for the CLEP examination.
