New Student – Family Member (Dependent)

  1. Apply for admission to John Tyler.
  2. Apply for Federal Aid by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. JTCC's school code is 004004.
  3. Apply for VA Educational Benefits, if applicable. Choose from the options below:
    • Chapter 35 Dependents Education Assistance Program VA Pamphlet/Fact Sheet
      Apply for veteran education benefits at ebenefits.va.gov. After you click "submit," a pop-up confirmation message should appear.  Additionally, an e-mail stating the same will be sent to the e-mail address you entered during the application process.  Bring a paper copy of the applicable confirmation e-mail and/or message to the JTCC MVEO on either campus or forward the confirmation e-mail to: veterans@jtcc.edu.
    • Virginia Military Survivors and Dependents Education Program (VMSDEP)
      This Commonwealth of Virginia benefit waives the cost of tuition at public colleges and universities and also provides a book stipend. Apply here.
    • Post 9/11 GI Bill (Chapter 33): Transfer of Entitlement Fact Sheet on Transferability
      Active duty members may transfer their Post 9/11 GI Bill to their spouse or dependents if certain conditions are met.

      To transfer the benefit:
      • Use your CAC card, DoD Self-Service Logon, or DFAS pin (myPay) to log on to the DoD Transfer of Education Benefits (TEB) web application. Print a copy of the screen once the status says "approved," and bring a copy to the MVEO at John Tyler.
      • Once the transfer of benefit is approved, family members must apply to use the transferred benefit by completing VA FORM 22-1990e with the Department of Veterans Affairs using VONAPP. At the end of the online application process, click "submit."  A pop-up confirmation message should appear.  Additionally, an e-mail stating the same will be sent to the e-mail address you entered during the application process.  Bring a paper copy of the applicable confirmation e-mail and/or message to the JTCC MVEO on either campus or forward the confirmation e-mail to: veterans@jtcc.edu. 
      • The active duty service member meeting the requirements outlined in the Fact Sheet on Transferability (link above), may transfer up to 36 months of benefits. Members can only transfer benefits to their dependents while on active duty. Service members may modify or delete the transfer at any time.
  4. Take the JTCC Placement Tests.
  5. Meet with an academic counselor, and visit the Admissions and Records Office. Bring the following items:
    • Current Military Orders
    • Proof of residency (item of mail with name and local address if residing off-base)
    • Military ID Card
  6. Have your military and transfer credits evaluated.
    • United States Air Force, request your military transcript through the Air Force Transcript Portal.
    • All other branches of service, complete the Joint Services Transcript Request.
    • Request official college/university transcripts be sent to:

  7. Attend an orientation session if possible. Follow the College on Facebook or watch www.jtcc.edu/news for information on upcoming sessions.
  8. Meet with a MVEO Counselor. Bring a copy of:
    • Your DD 214 (Member-4 copy)
    • A completed/printed application for benefits (VA Form 22-1990 , VA Form 22-5490, or applicable form)
    • The Certificate of Eligibility (VA mails this to you after you have applied for benefits)
  9. Select your classes and register.
  10. Pay tuition and fees no later than due date.
  11. Meet with a MVEO Counselor to get your classes "Certified" (i.e., to activate your benefits).
    • Ensure your enrollment (classes) are requirements of your degree. To assist you in selecting classes, view your advisement report.

    • Bring any items from step 8 that you have not brought in to your MVEO counselor.

You MUST Inform Your JTCC MVEO Counselor (School Certifying Official) if you:

  • Change your enrollment in any manner (drop/add/withdraw)
  • Change your program of study

Failure to do this may result in under payment or over payment of benefits, which will cause a debt to JTCC and/or the VA.

Continuing Study/Semesters:

Only classes that apply to your program may be certified.
