1967. Virginia’s concept for a new type of college system was in its infancy, and John Tyler Community College, the first community college in the Commonwealth to be built from the ground up, opened for classes.
With Time, Growth
Since those early days, we’ve seen much change in our communities and in the needs of the business and industry that call Central Virginia home. We, too, have evolved over the past five decades, adding a second campus and new learning spaces; embracing cutting-edge technology; enhancing our programs; and growing our student body from its original 1,200 to more than 14,000 students.
One thing, however, has remained constant throughout the years – our dedication to educational excellence, our students and our communities. It is not just what we do, it is who we are: our community’s college – yesterday, today and tomorrow.
50 & Forward
2017 marks 50 years of John Tyler Community College, and throughout the year, we invite you to join us as we celebrate who we are at this important milestone and how we envision moving our college forward in its mission to inspire student success and community vitality.
