CHESTER and MIDLOTHIAN, Va. – With cheers, laughter and applause surrounding them, more than 50 students celebrated a milestone: their completion of John Tyler Community College Nursing Program. The accomplishments of Tyler’s newest nurses were recognized during a Nursing Pinning Ceremony held May 11, 2018 in the Multipurpose Center at Virginia State University. Tyler nursing alumna Janet D. Vaughan, RN, who works at Johnston-Willis Hospital, delivered the keynote address. Vaughan told her new colleagues that they should never feel alone or be afraid to ask questions. Learning, she said, does not end with a college degree; it is ongoing, continuing throughout one’s career.

Pinning dates back to the 1880s. The pin, given to graduate candidates, symbolizes the school of nursing where the students earned their clinical experience, achieved academic credentials and began their socialization into the profession. The ceremony marks the completion of that rigorous training and is often viewed with the same importance as commencement.

John Tyler Community College offers more than 60 majors that provide pathways to careers in high-demand fields; transfer opportunities to four-year colleges and universities; and industry credentials and licensures. The college, with campuses in Chester and Midlothian, a Nursing Education Center, online classes, and off-campus classrooms, served more than 13,900 students during the 2016-17 academic year. It also assisted nearly 6,000 learners and more than 200 companies and organizations through its workforce development division, Community College Workforce Alliance.
